PeaceworkersUK (PWUK) is part of the Peacebuilding Issues Programme of International Alert (IA). Previously an independent NGO, PWUK become part of IA in 2006.
PWUK focuses on raising standards in the field of conflict prevention, crisis management and peacebuilding through an integrated programme of research, training, assessment and recruitment.
Peaceworkers UK:
works with voluntary organisations, government departments, inter-governmental organisations (IGOs) and other bodies to promote the appropriate use civilians in the prevention, management and resolution of violent conflict and the alleviation of suffering caused by violent conflict.
provides education and training programmes to enhance the skills of civilians working in regions affected by conflict.
conducts research into the use of civilian personnel for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict. The results of this research are disseminated to an array of parliamentarians, NGOs, government departments, academics and other relevant bodies.
The Training programme of Peaceworkers UK:
The overall aim of Peaceworkers UK is to improve both the quality and quantity of civilian personnel working in the fields of conflict prevention, crisis management and peacebuilding. We believe this requires the establishment of transparent and universal standards of professional competency that can serve as benchmarks for quality performance as well as targets to be achieved through training and placement schemes.
Our interest in training is subsidiary to our interest in the assessment of competence, and we therefore approach training primarily as a means to prepare people for an assessment of their competence. From our point of view, training is only required where people do not already have the confidence to undertake an assessment. We would expect people with sufficient experience to skip the training and just do the assessment.
The objective of any training module we run is to help participants develop a few key skills that would be generally considered essential for working in a conflict prevention, crisis management or peacebuilding capacity. The assessment at the end of each module will determine, as far as possible, to what extent candidates possess those skills. The learning objectives for each course are therefore identical to the performance criteria that form the basis of the assessment that follows
Peaceworkers regularly runs trainings from Level 1, designed for newcomers in the field of Peacework, to Level 5, for experienced professionals.

The Peaceworkers Register:
The PeaceworkersRegister is the centerpiece of our efforts to build a quality-controlled, independent recruitment service for civilian personnel needed across a wide range of categories in the peace and conflict field. Once a candidate has joined the Register, s/he will have access to, among other things, jobs and training directories. If the candidate has been assessed by PeaceworkersUK or one of our partners, s/he may be put forward by us for relevant vacancies on official peace missions as well as with NGOs working in conflict areas.
Some of the areas of work covered by the Register include human rights, rule of law, civil administration, democratisation, conflict transformation, protective accompaniment, media development, security, refugees, international presence, general monitoring and observation, project management, elections, trauma, reintegration and reconciliation. In addition to access to our Jobs Directory and our Training Directory, members of the Register will also have access to a Seminars and Events Directory, a Directory of relevant Academic Programmes, and our Conflicts directory where one can search for information on Peacework activities around the globe.
